Every winter, after the first proper gale blows through Nottinghamshire, the phone starts. Same conversation nearly every time the fence is flat on the lawn, it only went in four or five years ago, and the owner wants to know what to fit so they never have to do this again.
Here’s the honest answer. Steel palisade and welded mesh are the strongest fencing you can buy in the UK. For a domestic garden, closeboard timber on concrete posts is as strong as you’ll ever realistically need.
But material is only half of it. Pull down a failed fence and look at where it actually broke. It’s almost never the panel. It’s the post.

The short answer, and why it needs a caveat
Steel palisade and welded mesh are the strongest types of fencing available in the UK. Both are made to British Standards BS 1722-12 and BS 1722-14 hot-dip galvanised against corrosion, and built to resist deliberate attack. They’ll stand 30 to 40 years with no maintenance worth mentioning.
For a garden, the strongest practical specification is closeboard (feather edge) timber on slotted concrete posts with concrete gravel boards. That combination routinely lasts 20 to 30 years.
The caveat is that “strong” is doing four different jobs in one word:
- Impact and security can it be climbed, cut or kicked through?
- Wind resistance will it survive a 70mph gust with a solid face acting as a sail?
- Durability how long before rot or rust takes it apart?
- Stability is it anchored properly, or bolted to something already rotting?
Those pull against each other. A 358 mesh panel is close to uncuttable and stops no wind at all. A solid oak fence is immovable by hand and lifts clean out of the ground if the posts are wrong.
Most people asking this question after a storm don’t mean security. They mean the last two.
How each fencing material actually performs
Steel palisade and welded mesh. Vertical pales, usually 3mm gauge, bolted to rails and fixed to steel posts set in concrete. Welded mesh covers the same ground standard weldmesh for boundaries, 358 mesh (prison mesh) where the 76mm × 12.7mm apertures are too tight for fingers or bolt croppers. Rated systems carry LPS 1175 certification.
The catch is obvious enough. No privacy, and it looks industrial. Fitting a palisade round a suburban garden is like putting a roll cage in a family hatchback, stronger, entirely wrong for the job.

Concrete posts and gravel boards. Not a fence on its own, but the strongest foundation available for one. Reinforced concrete doesn’t rot, doesn’t get eaten, and doesn’t snap at ground level, which is where timber posts go. Fit an ordinary panel into a concrete post system and you’ll get roughly double the life you’d get from the same panel on timber. If you take one thing from this page, take that.
Closeboard and feather edge timber. Built on site rather than bought in panels. Tapered boards are nailed vertically to horizontal arris rails so each one overlaps its neighbour, giving two thicknesses of timber across most of the face. Made to BS 1722-5. Two practical wins: it follows sloping ground in a continuous line, and when a board splits, you replace the board, not the panel.
Composite. Wood-plastic composite shrugs off rot, insects and UV, and holds its colour for 25 years or more. Strength is where the marketing gets loose, though. Composite is brittle under sharp impact in a way timber isn’t a football, a wheelbarrow handle, a car reversing. Timber dents and springs back. Composite chips, and you can’t sand it out.
Steel railings and aluminium. Very strong, decades of life, and aluminium won’t corrode at all. Good on frontages and driveways where you want a boundary without blocking light. Neither gives privacy or shelter, which rules them out for most rear gardens.
Chain link and mesh. Cheap, quick, easy to cut, easy to climb. Containment fencing rather than strong fencing.

Timber is where most gardens end up. It’s also where the gap between the cheapest option and the best one is widest, so it’s worth going further.
The strongest type of wooden fencing
Ranked honestly, from strongest down:
- Closeboard / feather edge overlapping vertical boards on arris rails. Strongest by a clear margin.
- Wooden palisade spaced vertical pales. Strong frame, but no privacy or wind shelter.
- Post-and-rail heavy rails morticed into posts. Very strong for its weight, and the standard for horses.
- Hit-and-miss and slatted boards fixed alternately either side of the rails. Slightly weaker face, far better in wind.
- Overlap (lap) panels thin slats stapled into a light frame.
- Waney edge lap panels with the bark left on. Rustic look, same structure.
That fifth entry deserves a pause. The lap panel is what most people picture when they say “fence panel”, and it’s built from slats about 5mm thick held together with staples. It isn’t a bad product for the money. It just isn’t a strong one, and buying it for an exposed boundary and hoping is the most common fencing mistake we see. Is feather edge fencing strong?
Yes feather edge is the strongest wooden fencing, and the strength comes from how it’s built rather than what it’s made of. Each tapered board overlaps the next, so the face is effectively double thickness. Fixed to three arris rails, it doesn’t rack or flex.
It also fails gracefully. A cracked board is a ten-minute repair with two nails. A damaged panel is a new panel.

The best wood for fencing in the UK
- Pressure-treated softwood European redwood or whitewood, treated to Use Class 4 for anything going in the ground. The standard spec, and for good reason.
- European larch dense, naturally durable, holds fixings well. A real step up without hardwood money.
- Western red cedar stable, rot-resistant, weathers to silver-grey. Soft, so it marks easily.
- English oak strongest and longest-lasting for posts and rails. Heavy, expensive, and it moves as it seasons.
Worth clearing up: when a UK merchant says “redwood”, they mean European redwood Scots pine not the Californian redwood you’ll read about in American fencing articles. Treatment class beats species every time
This is the part that saves people money. An untreated oak post in wet clay will rot faster than a softwood post treated to Use Class 4.
The grading comes from BS 8417. Use Class 3 covers timber above ground rails, boards, panels. Use Class 4 covers timber in ground contact, and it’s the only rating worth accepting for a post going into soil. Anything sold as “green treated” with no stated class is a question waiting to be asked.
Species affects strength and appearance. Treatment decides how long the timber survives the soil.
Why fences fail at the post, not the panel
Look at where a collapsed fence actually broke. Ground level, at the post, where wet soil and oxygen and timber meet the one spot where rot has everything it needs.
That’s why “which panel is strongest” is slightly the wrong question. The panel is what you look at. The post is what holds it up.
Slotted concrete posts win outright. No rot, good impact resistance, and panels drop into the slots so replacement later is a two-minute job. Heavier to install, less attractive, though barely visible once the fence is up.
Timber posts look better and cost less. Specified properly 100mm × 100mm minimum, UC4 treated, set in concrete, top cut to shed water you’ll get 15 to 20 years. Specified badly, five. We’ve written separately on how long wooden fence posts last and what shortens them.
Metal post spikes are the ones to avoid for a permanent fence. Driving a spike in and dropping a post into the socket is fast and cheap, and it’s the biggest single cause of early failure in UK gardens. Short lever arm against wind load, water trapped round the post base, and the whole thing works loose over a few seasons. Fine for temporary work there’s a place for step-in fence posts but they aren’t a foundation.
How deep should fence posts go?

Bury at least one-third of the post’s above-ground height, with 600mm as the working minimum for a standard 1.8m fence. That means a 2.4m post for a 6ft fence, not a 2.1m one.
Go to 750mm on exposed sites, in soft or clay ground, and for gate posts. Dig roughly three times the post width, sit the post on 100mm of compacted hardcore so water drains instead of pooling under the end grain, then concrete it in.
Fast-setting post mix is fine for domestic work. For tall fences and gate posts, properly mixed concrete haunched above ground and sloped away from the timber is stronger. Gates especially a gate applies a constant twisting load a panel never does.
Gravel boards are the cheapest upgrade there is
A gravel board runs along the bottom of the fence between the posts and takes the ground contact, so the timber above never touches soil.
Concrete gravel boards under timber panels cost very little against the job and typically add ten years to everything above them. They also stop soil, mulch and lawn edging sitting against the boards, which is exactly where rot starts. Nothing else in fencing gives you that much life per pound spent.
Get the base right and the next thing testing your fence is the weather.
Wind is what actually brings fences down
Most UK fence failures are wind failures. A 1.8m solid fence puts an enormous flat face into a gale, and the load doesn’t spread it concentrates at the posts, at ground level, on the weakest point in the whole structure.
Wind loading is calculated under BS EN 1991-1-4, and the maths surprises people. Double the wind speed and you roughly quadruple the pressure. A fence that stood through years of ordinary weather can go in one named storm, not because it deteriorated, but because that gust was in a different league.

Solid versus permeable. A solid fence is a sail. A fence with gaps lets air through and sheds a large part of that load. Hit-and-miss is the sensible middle ground boards fixed alternately front and back, giving around 50% permeability while still blocking sightlines. Stand square to it and you can’t see through. Air goes straight between the boards.
On an exposed boundary, hit-and-miss on concrete posts will outlast solid closeboard in the same position, even though closeboard is the stronger panel in isolation. Strength you can’t anchor isn’t strength.
On exposed or hilltop plots, three changes matter more than the panel choice. Bring post spacing in from 1.8m to 1.5m centres. Deepen the posts to 750mm. And consider dropping the height a 1.5m fence catches noticeably less wind than a 1.8m one, and on a genuinely exposed line that’s often the difference.
Trellis tops are worth a warning. Bolting trellis onto an existing fence adds sail area at the point of maximum leverage and adds nothing underneath. A mature climber in full leaf turns a permeable fence into a solid one.
What “heavy duty” should actually mean
The term isn’t regulated, so check the specification rather than the label:
- Board thickness feather edge should be around 22mm at the thick edge. Thinner is a light-duty product wearing a heavy-duty name.
- Rails three arris rails on a 1.8m fence, not two. Most common corner cut, easiest to spot.
- Frame timber 45mm × 45mm or heavier on framed panels. Thin frames rack out of square.
- Posts 100mm × 100mm minimum for timber.
- Fixings galvanised ring-shank nails or screws. Staples mean it’s a lap panel with better marketing.
- Treatment UC4 in ground contact, stated on the paperwork, not implied by the colour.
Ask a supplier those six questions and you’ll know inside a minute whether their “heavy duty” means anything.
If concrete posts put you off aesthetically, there are ways round it. Timber sleeves clad over concrete posts give you the look of timber with the lifespan of concrete. Steel posts with hardwood or composite infill work well in contemporary gardens. A brick or gabion plinth under a timber fence solves ground contact permanently and handles slopes cleanly.
Matching the fence to the job
Standard garden boundary. Closeboard or hit-and-miss on slotted concrete posts, concrete gravel boards, 1.8m. Costs meaningfully more than lap panels and lasts three times as long the wider case for timber fencing still holds up when it’s specified properly.
Sloping ground. Closeboard, built in place. Panels have to be stepped, which leaves triangular gaps underneath. Closeboard racks to follow the slope.
Clay and waterlogged plots. Concrete posts, no hesitation. Clay holds water against timber and swells and shrinks through the year, working posts loose. Hardcore under every post.
Horses and livestock. Post-and-rail is the standard visible, forgiving, and it won’t injure an animal that leans into it. Three rails, posts at 1.8m centres, oak or UC4 softwood. Add mesh rather than barbed wire, which causes serious injuries to horses, and electric tape along the top stops leaning. More on species in best wood for farm fencing.
Dogs and children. Solid boarding, no gaps at the base, gravel boards tight to the ground. Fixing boards to the inside of the rails removes the horizontal footholds that make a fence climbable.
Security and commercial. Palisade or 358 mesh on steel posts in concrete. Specify by rated resistance LPS 1175, or Secured by Design approval rather than by height.
Cost against lifespan
Quoted per metre, the strong options look expensive. Divide by the years they serve and it inverts.

The cheap fence is the expensive one. A budget fence replaced twice in twenty-five years costs more than the good fence fitted once, and that’s before two lots of labour, two skip hires and whatever the storm damage cost in between.
Spend the money on concrete posts, gravel boards, correct post depth, three rails, UC4 treatment and galvanised fixings. Don’t lose sleep over premium timber species, decorative post caps, or the very top end of the composite range mid-range performs almost identically.
What the rules let you build
Under permitted development in England, you can put up a fence, wall or gate up to 2 metres high without planning permission. That drops to 1 metre where the boundary adjoins a highway footpaths and verges included, not just roads.
You’ll need permission if the property is listed or sits within a listed building’s curtilage, if the fence forms a boundary with a neighbouring listed building, or if an Article 4 direction removes those rights. Conservation areas add a wrinkle: you may need consent to take down an existing fence, so check before demolition rather than after. Rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and your local authority is the final word either way. On the “new fence law” doing the rounds there isn’t one. The 2m limit, the 1m highway limit and boundary responsibility have all been in place for years. Two boundary myths worth retiring while we’re here. There’s no rule that the left-hand boundary is yours. And there’s no rule that the posts face the owner’s side it’s a convention, not a legal test. The answer is on your title plan at HM Land Registry, where T-marks show responsibility: the T sits inside the boundary of whoever maintains it, and two joined together mean it’s shared. How we specify it
Our standard garden build is closeboard or hit-and-miss timber on slotted concrete posts with concrete gravel boards, posts at 600mm minimum and 750mm where the boundary is exposed, three arris rails, UC4 timber throughout and galvanised fixings. It isn’t the cheapest quote you’ll get and we don’t pretend otherwise.
We specify it because of what we keep finding on callouts. Post spikes worked loose. Timber posts rotted through at ground level. Panels sitting straight on soil. Two rails where there should have been three. Almost none of it is a panel that wasn’t strong enough nearly all of it is a foundation that wasn’t.

Frequently asked questions
Is my fence covered by home insurance if it blows down?
Usually not. Most UK buildings policies specifically exclude fences, gates and hedges from storm damage cover, even when the rest of the policy pays out. Check your wording before you assume you’re protected it’s a large part of why specifying properly is worth the extra outlay.
Can I fit new panels to my existing fence posts?
Only if the posts are sound, and most aren’t by the time the panels have failed. Push hard against each post at shoulder height: any movement at ground level means it’s already going. Fitting new panels to tired posts buys you a couple of years and costs you the whole job again afterwards.
Does a strong fence still need treating or painting?
Pressure-treated timber doesn’t need it structurally, but a coat of quality preservative every three to four years slows down surface weathering and keeps the colour. Concrete posts, composite and galvanised steel need nothing beyond an occasional wash.
How long does it take to install a fence?
A standard 20-metre garden run takes two people around two days one to clear the old fence and set the posts, one to hang the panels after the concrete has gone off. Difficult access, hard ground or removing concrete-set stumps can add a day.
Do I need to tell my neighbour before replacing a boundary fence?
There’s no legal duty to notify if the fence is yours and you stay on your own land. In practice it’s worth a conversation, particularly if you need access from their side, if the boundary is shared, or if the new fence will look different from the old one.
Can my neighbour attach things to my fence or lean things against it?
Not without your permission. If the fence is on your land it’s your property, and they have no automatic right to fix trellis, lights or planters to it, or to stack materials against it. Weight and moisture against the boards are two of the fastest ways to shorten a fence’s life.
